This record group consists of two sets of records of the Forestry Division of the Michigan Department of Conservation. The first set of records are forest fire reports (1965-66). The reports give precise location of fires; its cause; the date and time the fire was started, discovered, reported, attacked, controlled, and put out; the area burned; and weather conditions at the time of the fire. Also includes the numbers, names and pay of those who fought the fire; equipment used; a damage assessment for timber, forage, recreation, wildlife and property; the total cost of the fire; and a detailed description of the fire. The second set of records are the Clarke-McNary budget reports (1960-65). These contain the financial plans for state and federal cooperative forestry programs. The Clarke-McNary Act of 1924 offered Federal funds to states for forest fire protection efforts, watershed maintenance, timber-land purchases, and other projects. The materials in this set of records are the budgetary statements needed to qualify for the monies to help defray the costs of forest fires.
